Discovering the Library
Free books
Tuesday 01 December 2009 at 3:06 pm.Not too long ago I got my library card to the Santa Barbara Public Library. I wasn't ever really much of a reader growing up, meaning I only read when I was required to. I think it's safe to say that I've got the bug now. The library has tons of good stuff, and if it's not at the closest library to you for 50 cents they'll deliver to your home library. Such a good deal! Anyways, I recommend reading to all you out there, especially from the library because it's free (or nearly free) and you don't have to worry about storing the book once your done with it.
Some books I've read recently are:
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
Superfreakonomics by Steven Levitt.
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.
Columbine by David Cullen.
Outliers was really interesting. It looked at why some people are incredibly successful. How they become outliers compared to the rest of us, and when you examine closely, they got there because of a lot of help from others and were able to excel in small niches in expertise that become mainstream.
Superfreakonomics is the sequel to Freaknomics. And both are great. In Freakonomics, one of the popular microeconomics studies focuses on why crack dealers live at home if drug dealing is so profitable. Well, in superfreakonomics, there's another microeconomic study on prostitutes. As an Economics major, I'll say this stuff is way more interesting than the textbooks back in school!
Into the Wild was great too. I saw the movie first and really enjoyed it and the soundtrack! The book was an easy read and very enjoyable.
Columbine was an interesting book too. I remember being very fascinated when this happened 10 years ago. So I found reading the book was very satisfying. It really examines what happened and why it happened in great detail. If school shootings or terrorist stuff is interesting to you, this book will not disappoint.
I currently have two books in my possession from the library and am very excited to read them. The first being Where men win glory, by Jon Krakauer. As you recall he wrote Into the Wild. This book is about Pat Tillman, a guy who was a NFL football player making millions who gave it up to go fight for his country. The other book is another by Malcolm Gladwell called Blink. I'm not sure exactly what it's about but maybe I'll post that once I read it.
I hope I've inspired at least one person to go get a library card and read a little bit. During these hard economic times, go ahead and treat yourself to a good book!
And if you've read a good book lately, or have any recommendations, please post them to comments and I'll check them out!
